Wanted!  Your thoughts on GBLT youth, bullying, cyber-bullying and teen suicide:

A moment of silence was held today across the globe for teens who took their lives as a result of bullying.  Will this help build awareness or effect change?  Canadian teen, Amanda Todd, took her life after she was threatened and stalked after having posted intimate photos of herself online.  Sigh.  As a mom, it saddens me that a teen's mistake should have such devasting consequences in this internet age.  www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2…

Actually, my opinion on the Amanda Todd issue can be summed up in recent posts by the "Stay Mad" page on Facebook, specifically this: [link].

I've been bullied for years. Both verbally and physically, and it got to the point where people were expelled for what they did. My parents are divorced, and I am quite obviously not the favorite child. I have never had a particularly easy life, and there were times I didn't want to go to school. But I did not have it the worst it could be. There are children starving. There are children fighting against children that don't know what they're doing. My friend was one of those children, and his life was monumentally worse than mine or hers ever was. Yet he never even considered suicide. The saddest thing is, that prior to her death people were ready to insult her whenever they felt like it, but as soon as she died everyone fawned over how sad they were.

We ignore the problems before the death, and then repent afterwards. We then promptly do nothing to how we work in order to solve the problems. It's a vicious cycle, one that won't be helped if we pay extra attention to this one case and ignore all the others. There are kids bullied every day, in every school. They suffer, and if they're like me, they probably cry about it when they feel it's safe to do so. Saying that we care for Amanda Todd is not a terrible step. Saying that we care for all of our own is the right one to make, however. If we want to make a difference, then we shouldn't be crying over one loss. We should be moving forward to prevent hundreds more. We shouldn't be looking aside until a death happens, we should be doing all we can to ensure these situations don't even occur in the first place.
